The Gralien Report

A new study that appeared in The British Journal of Psychiatry by researchers at University Medical Center Groningen in The Netherlands suggests that nearly 1 out of every ten children, seven to eight years of age, report hearing voices that don’t really exist and appear to come from nowhere. For the most part, researchers have found that these voices “don’t have an impact on daily life,” and advise that children who report them should merely be reassured and watched very closely.

Of course, the researchers have already probed for potential links between children who report hearing such disembodied voices and those who will later suffer from mental disorders like schizophrenia. Nonetheless, in most cases this sort of activity, at least among young children, has not been found to be a cause for concern, and is considered to be quite normal.

If we choose to look at this from an evolutionary viewpoint, it almost seems that hearing voices would be beneficial to young people, or even mature adults at various times throughout human history. Many people have observed how animals have a sort of “sixth sense” when it comes to navigation and other biological functions (consider the multitude of stories of household pets who, after being separated from their families, manage to travel enormous distances to find their way home). Indeed, if we were to consider whether man could have ever harnessed similar instincts, it might make sense that our early ancestors, often wandering nomads, might have had a psychological development in their brains that created a sort of “knowing” or “guiding force” they could rely on. Indeed, it would be assumed that this would have been entirely a product of how the early mind worked, rather than some supernatural force. To put it simply, before mankind had risen to the dominant species on Earth, they may have relied on senses that instilled a feeling of “being led,” when in essence, they were leading themselves.

Residents of Newfoundland have reported seeing a strange fireball-like object emerging from the ocean near their homes in Harbour Mille on the south coast. Many folks in the area reported the object, but Darlene Stewart, who was photographing the sunset when the object appeared, managed to capture an image as the thing–whatever it was–streaked across the sky. The photograph appears to show a missile or other elongated object, emitting flames or what has been described as “heavy smoke” illuminated by the light of sunset (keep in mind, the Trident II missile in the image to the right is merely for illustrative purposes). Another witness, Emmy Pardy, stated that “It appeared to come out of the ocean,” and “was like it was in the middle of the bay.”

This alone may be the most curious aspect of the sighting; however, if what it entails is of any merit, it may also be the most frightening. Gralien Report correspondent Christopher McCollum, who sent the story along, referred to the object as a “USO,” borrowing the term used by the late Fortean scholar Ivan T. Sanderson which denotes an “Unidentified Submerged Object.” Submarines with the Russian Navy operating in international waters throughout the Atlantic have reported an overwhelming number of “USO” encounters, as described in recently declassified documents released by naval officials in 2009. However, if this object weren’t some kind of “USO” or other unidentified object, what are the alternatives?

The popular film District 9 that appeared in theaters last year, in addition to being a brilliant sci-fi story, also became well known for its social commentary on living conditions in the very real District Six during apartheid-era South Africa. In the film, a gang of alien “refugees” (called “prawns” by humans) appear in a gigantic spacecraft hovering over Johannesburg, stranded without a leader or a command module able to pilot the massive craft. In spite of their advanced technological weaponry and spacecraft, the aliens are rather subordinate to  humans; almost allowing themselves to be “herded” into the cluttered ghettos that comprise “District Nine.”

In reality, if aliens with advanced anti-gravitational aircraft and plasma blasters ended up stranded on Earth and didn’t attempt to attack us, would it seem strange to you? According to one expert, it’s not only strange… it’s highly unlikely.

Extra-terrestrials, according to Cambridge University Professor Simon Conway Morris, would have all-to-human “foibles,” which he doesn’t doubt would include greed, violence and similar tendencies to gathering up and exploiting resources that humans have shown for centuries. Morris says that, although they could in fact show up more-or-less peacefully searching for a place to live like the Prawns in District 9, they would inevitably become squatters, and in acting out colonialism similar to our past expansive conquests, they would “help themselves to water, minerals and fuel.”

“In short,” Morris says, “if there is any life out there, then it is likely to be very similar to us.” That being the case, should we be worried?

Occasionally, we do receive letters here at the Gralien Report from readers who like to share perspectives and insights regarding various strange phenomenon, conspiracy theories, fringe science updates, and other newsworthy topics. Even more occasionally (very seldom, at best), I will include some of these missives here for the readers to indulge, especially if I feel that they may be of interest. Below is one such recent correspondence, sent to me by an anonymous individual who has been independently studying changes in nature such as the disappearances of honeybees in America, as well as possible food poisoning outbreaks the likes of those reported frequently last year. Therefore, the views expressed here, of course, are not those of myself or anyone affiliated directly with The Gralien Report, but instead reflect a concerned member of the populace. You are free, as always, to make your own judgments hereafter:

As you know, Johnson & Johnson was recently in the news after being forced to recall of a variety of OTC medicines which caused severe gastrointestinal illness and symptoms of neurological damage in a variety of consumers. It is also clear they have been aware of and hiding this problem for at least 6 months, and probably far longer. The initial explanation was problems with offgassing in ‘constructed wood’ pallets. I doubt this is the cause, however, it is very likely a contributing factor.

Here’s the latest “poor lil’ bugger with mange found dead in Texas” story, this time as covered by CBS news correspondent Carol Cavazos. As stated in the CBS report, “The legend of the ‘chupacabra’ is no longer a legend according to some Texas residents claiming to have seen the animal.” Safe it to say, whatever this critter is, we’ve seen many like it before, and although this “chupacabra” is more likely to be a raccoon, the verdict, according to some experts, is still out:

This morning, WPIX.com out of New York reported on a strange find at nearby Plum Island, involving the dead, decomposing body of what is being called a mutant. This, however, is no “Montauk Monster”; the body is human:

A security guard on foot patrol reportedly discovered the clothed decomposing body Thursday afternoon on the southwest beach area of the island, where access is restricted, police said.

The body was described as that of a white male about 6-feet tall with a large build and “very long” fingers. According to authorities, there were no obvious signs of trauma.

In all likelihood, “long fingers” as described here are probably somewhat less than remarkable, since actual measurements aren’t given along with the scant information the report provides. Until actual photos, coroner’s reports, or at very least, some kind of formal measurements are given, we won’t know for certain how long “very long” actually is. Rest assured, however, that if it is a clothed human body, many of these details won’t be released immediately, as the official investigation ensues.

The next question I have, though it might not be so obvious to some, is “what did the feet look like?”

A recent article appearing at the blog of the website beliefnet.com, titled “George Noory, a Religious Talk Show Host?”, provided some rather interesting commentary on America’s favorite late-night radio host, pertaining to belief-based faith and collective systems of interest surrounding Ufology. According to author Rod Dreher, who cites a profile of Noory that recently appeared in Atlantic Monthly:

If you were to remove the explicitly political statements from the monologues of, say, Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity on a given day, what you’d have is a worldview that, in its understanding of the workings of power and its sense that some elusive but monstrous Truth is being withheld, very closely resembles George Noory’s.

Dreher cheerfully adds, “A lot of that makes sense. And it could be as well that people … notice things that our secular materialist paradigm denies could possibly exist, and when somebody like Noory comes along and says, ‘You know, you might not be crazy,’ they glom onto him.”

Looking at this from another perspective, something about the Coast to Coast format that really seems to “work” so well is the fact that it taps into the fringe consciousness of America (and the world) at large. Though UFOs and strange phenomenon are often featured, when crisis occurs somewhere abroad (as with the recent earthquake that devastated Haiti, or even during the weeks that followed the September 11th 2001 terrorist attack), the format can just as easily–and seamlessly–shift to news.
