Another week has passed, and thus brought us together to study the world’s finest examples of esoterica available anywhere on the web, courtesy of your favorite weekly podcast.
This week’s Gralien Report Podcast features fun and sporty ways you can spend your summer trying to make money hunting Bigfoot, as well as discussion of the physics of UFO craft, strange time-traveling sea monkey men, and a discussion with Nick Redfern about his new book The Real Men in Black. It’s a fun time had by all, which even features a little music toward the end of hour two, courtesy of yours truly and Caleb Hanks of The Nova Echo. Expect a real melting pot of the unusual… and as always, enjoy!

The kith and kin of the UFO are a strange and varied bunch. In addition to the wonder and curiosity associated with flying saucers and supposed visitations by beings from space, there are also a few rather terrifying elements that are present throughout various UFO lore. These might involve claims of victims who describe otherworldly encounters with beings, where they are abducted and subjected to bizarre examinations aboard the advanced airships of the UFO occupants. But some reports of UFOs have even more strange and frightening occurrences that follow the initial sighting: these involve the infamous “men in black suits” who have so often appeared to taunt and terrorize those claiming to have had such encounters. For those who have met the alleged MIBs, this experience can often be far more terrifying than coming face-to-face with any actual extraterrestrial.
And yet, this area of the UFO mystery, save the references usually given within books devoted to the greater body of UFO lore in general, have hardly seen any introspective and focused treatment of their own. Thus, much like the Contactees of past decades were finally treated to a showcase of their own inherently bizarre nature, the astute Mr. Nick Redfern (probably an MIB himself, all things considered) has returned to provide such a narrative for these vile and nefarious plainclothes men who harass the UFO witnesses in his latest offering from New Page Books, The Real Men in Black: Evidence, Famous Cases, ad True Stories of these Mysterious Men and their Connection to UFO Phenomena.

I found this rare little gem in a consignment shop recently, which I thought would make a nice decorative piece for the Gralien Bunker (especially since this is home to the studio we use for the weekly show where we talk about aliens and weirdness). It’s a vinyl record commemorating the infamous October 30, 1938 broadcast of War of the Worlds by Orson Welles.
In addition to the aesthetic merit it will provide once I get it in a frame, I love how the cover art depicts actual newspaper clippings showing public reaction in the aftermath of the broadcast. Below are a few gems to help illustrate the sheer panic that was enveloping the nation on that fateful evening.

One of the more terrifying and strange aspects of Forteana and the unexplained ongoing today relates to the stories of so-called “Black Eyed Children.” Indeed, this subject has seen a lot of press in the last few years, thanks to writers and researchers like Jason Offutt, Nick Redfern, and a few others. However, despite the appearance of often being a more recent phenomenon, there are also many aspects of this ongoing mystery that have associations with much earlier times. One researcher who has begun to draw such parallels to earlier reports of beings with hollowed-out or blackened eyes is Gralien Report correspondent and resident “Historian of Obscurities” Vance Pollock.
“The terrifying image of the black-eyed children first called to mind an encounter sometimes related to episodes of astral projection or out-of-body experiences,” Vance writes. “I have two accounts written by authors who both lived at some point in Asheville, North Carolina,” alluding first to none other than William Dudley Pelley, a radical Nazi supporter (who eventually served time in prison for speaking in favor of the Pearl Harbor Bombing) and prominent figure in the early twentieth century spiritualist movement. Indeed, what Pelley describes sounds very similar to a black-eyed being of the modern era, though the circumstances under which the encounter took place are far stranger even than those weirdest among the conventional reports today.
