Read aloud, the title of this post may seem slightly provocative, and upon further reading, for many it may constitute outright silliness, as what we’re dealing with here has primarily to do with insects and Forteana. Reports in this category range from synchronistic occurrences involving insects, to the literal appearance of so-called “Mantis Men” in concurrence with UFO abductions and altered states (there are even a few reports that divulge these creatures appearing under rather normal circumstances). But what prompted the notion of focusing on this weird subject here actually stems from what otherwise might have been an inconsequential experience of my own, which occurred only a few days ago.

I don’t presume to draw connections between what are truly, from the stance of obvious probability, entirely unrelated acts of murder, mayhem, inexplicable nudity, and high-strangeness; still, there seems to have been far more of all-of-the-above occurring lately than can be easily accounted for. These range from today’s lead story, that of a 28-year-old Bulgarian transient who inexplicably (and savagely) murdered a woman in her sixties, to a now ridiculous number of instances where people have either had “spiritual epiphanies” or simply gone bonkers, tore off their clothing, and wandered around in the buff for all to see. As I often begin to ask of such things, this recent rash of so-called “madness” has me wondering “what is the meaning of all this?!”

We’ve all heard of altitude sickness before, and even of the sort of light-headed sensations that can sometimes occur while ascending to great heights while traveling by air. Maybe you’ve even seen that classic episode of The Twilight Zone where William Shatner spies a terrible gremlin on the wing of the aircraft he is flying on, which threatens to take down the flight with its apparent appetite for steel. But a recent series of very real incidents involving what officials call an “outbreak of insanity” on various airlines has prompted baffling statements from pilots and FAA officials.
According to a report appearing in USA Today, the most recent of a series of incidents where passengers have behaved erratically–and even tried to open emergency doors in mid-flight–occurred Tuesday night. A Delta Air Lines Airbus A320 flight en route toward Boston was interrupted when a disgruntled 43-year-old passenger, Robert Hersey, apparently attempted to open an emergency door on the plane. Witnesses to this apparent instance of “air insanity” noted that Hersey had been seen drinking, however, and “appeared upset when the flight was late.” He was arrested by Massachusetts police after an emergency landing took place.

The body of work that comprises modern psychology is almost synonymous with names such as Freud, Pavlov, Skinner, and a number of other pioneering individuals. But perhaps there is none so revered–and also as curious in his many interests–as Carl Jung.
It’s no secret the Psychologist Carl Jung spent his lifetime fascinated with various aspects of occult spirituality. These interests in the unusual aspects of existence manifested in a number of ways for Jung, especially early in life. For instance, Jung came to believe at an early age that his soul was divided into his natural youthful persona of the present, paired with an “authoritative and influential man from the past,” namely what could be likened to the spirit of an eighteenth century man. There is also the very curious “ritual” Jung created as a boy, in which he carved a small figure out of wood and, placing it in a box he hid in the attic of his home, would write notes on tiny slips of paper in a “secret language” of his own creation; later, Jung would recognize this sort of activity as being similar to totem worship by primitive cultures around the world, and thus inspired his later innovations with his theories of psychological archetypes.
