Lights Out: Political Nonsense
I seldom touch on political topics on this website. However, I had to share this latest political joke, being circulated as a chain-mail-type message on various web forums and via email across the internet:
There are less than four months until the election, an election that will decide the next President of the United States. The person elected will be the president of all Americans, not just the Democrats or the Republicans. To show our solidarity as Americans, let’s all get together and show each other our support for the candidate of our choice. It’s time that we all came together, Democrats and Republicans alike. If you support the policies and character of John McCain, please drive with your headlights on during the day. If you support Obama, please drive with your headlights off at night. Thank you for your participation in this patriotic endeavor!
Snopes.com had fun with this one, sharing that the item “isn’t likely to cause any confused recipients to miss their dates with the ballot box (unless they’re gullible enough to actually go driving around at night with their headlights off).” The whole mess was circulated during previous elections in the past as well, and yet sadly, I’ve looked around online. Indeed, some folks are taking it seriously. Sheesh…
Now I don’t know about you, but if I drive with my lights off at night, I’m probably not going to see where I’m going well enough to drive in the first place! More likely, I am going to run off the side of the road and crash my car. This is why doing so is illegal in many (if not all) states. Furthermore, most cars built in the last decade have built-in features like “daytime lights” which stay on as long as the vehicle is running, day or night. What if a majority of the American “participants” in this idiotic… I mean, patriotic display of “brilliance” (or the lack thereof) were advertising support for one candidate or the other (in this case McCain) unintentionally, due to how their vehicle operates?
Lol… Just having a little fun.
