Here be Witches: Reports of ‘Flying Fiends’
While scanning the web looking for various links to videos of “monsters” in Latin America recently, I came across the following video of a purported “witch” filmed in mid flight over Monterrey, Mexico:

Though I first came across the video several months ago, it was nice to stumble across it again (and to see something other than the typical UFOs and Chupacabras for which central America is best known). True, the shape of the flying object in the clip might be considered witch-like, though in my opinion the resolution of the video makes it too difficult to really say what it could actually be. My initial impression was that it could be some kind of kite or balloon tethered to a moving vehicle.
Arguably, the most convincing information regarding this case appears later in the video, where two police officers are interviewed discussing the entities they had witnessed flying in circles over a cemetery alleged to be “right under the flight path of the flying humanoid in the video.” According to one officer’s description, “she was dressed in black with huge eyes, dark skin, she wore a long pointy hat, (and) she was flying through the air.” Boy, it sure sounds like a witch, huh?
In her book The Encyclopedia of Witches and Witchcraft, author Rosemary Ellen Guiley describes the act of flying with regard to the witches of European traditions:
A prevailing belief in the middle ages and renaissance held that the devil, his demons and witches could transport themselves and others through the air. Flying (also called transvection) usually was done with the aid of a broomstick, fork or shovel, according to lore; some witches were said to ride demons who were transformed into animals such as goats, cows, horses and wolves.
She goes on to describe the elements of magical and mystical flight, and that contrary to the negative imagery of witches and devils most often associated with flying, “Christian hagiography records numerous instances of saints levitating and moving about in the air. Eastern avatars and adepts also are said to levitate.” Still, according to the descriptions given by our frightened police officers from earlier, it sounds like Monterrey’s Witch is hardly any saint.
Flying humanoids aren’t restricted to Middle America, however. One of my favorite reports of all time has to do with a flying man who performed “acrobatics” over Coney Island, New York in the late 1800s. The New York Times included a piece about the apparition in its September 12, 1880 edition, detailing that “many reputable persons had seen a marvelous apparition” over Coney Island, “They all agree that it was a man engaged in flying toward New Jersey.” The creature, which was described as a humanoid, resembled “a man with bat’s wings and improved frog’s legs,” referencing the frog-like swimming motions it made with its legs while airborne. Estimates placed the creature at an altitude of over 1000 feet above Coney Island, flying close enough to reveal that it had a man’s face which bore “a cruel and determined expression.”
Then across the great pond, our next report hails from Romania where “Superman” was seen floating about last October, as excerpted from my article Ghostly Receptors in the February issue of Fate Magazine:
In late November 2007, a strange thing appeared in the skies over Mehedinti County, Romania. Nearly 20 villagers observed a rather unconventional UFO. Instead of resembling a futuristic aerial craft, it looked more like a man “flying in a standing position” a mere 100 yards above the ground, and “wearing a shiny blue suit, just like Superman’s.”
Area police gathered written statements from all the witnesses, who they said described the figure the same in every case. One of the officers, Ion Anuta, noted they had “talked [with] people of different ages who are all reliable citizens in our village. They all said they saw this strange creature [fly] over their houses in his shiny blue costume. We’ll just have to see what happens next.”
One area villager, Constantin Toader, agreed that “he looked like Superman and…he didn’t make any smoke or sound. [He was] just cruising around.”
Many reports describing “flying humanoids” similar to this have surfaced in recent years, especially in Latin America, where they are more often described as resembling witches. It seems that when sightings and encounters of this sort occur, involving UFOs which more closely resemble objects and characters prevalent in the cultures of those who witness them, they receive nearly as much attention from psychologists as they do from UFO researchers.
I can recall so many different instances where humans with wings (or other means of remaining aloft) have been reported that it nearly boggles my twisted mind! Therefore, I’ve included links to several interesting sites dealing with the phenomena which include everything from Mothman to “men swimming through the air with electric lights on their backs”. Also, don’t forget to take a look at some of the rather ominous photos included in the report below from Rense.com, depicting other flying humanoids photographed over Mexico and Latin America:
