This week, we lead off with a discussion of how a new theory could lead to the detection of alien spacecraft that are powered by black holes, as well as how certain ancient records are prompting scientists to rethink animal evolution. On the subject of animal evolution, we also weigh in on the latest claim of Spokane County residents who think they’ve found evidence of “Bigfoot”.

Elsewhere, a doctor recently caused debate after he told his patient that they didn’t have long to live, but did so using a hospital robot’s video screen. This raises a number of considerations about the way robotics are making our lives easier… but are they necessarily making things better? Many would raise similar conjectures about autonomous vehicles or self-driving cars, which polls continue to show aren’t fully trusted by the majority of Americans. However, a recent report details technology that’s already being used in Japan to spot potential shoplifters, before they have stolen anything… drawing comparisons to the kinds of “pre-crime” technologies seen in films like Minority Report.

Then in the second hour, we turn our attention to “the great unknown of the seas,” with a number of quaint commentaries appearing in 19th and early 20th-century newspapers pertaining to the debate over the existence of sea serpents. While largely accepted as mythological creatures, one of the articles we reference was published within days of one of the most famous alleged sightings of “sea serpents” in modern history. We look at this and glean a variety of perspectives on the subject on this week’s Gralien Report.
