In the video linked above, which appeared as part of an ABC News report from around 2009, a strange–and very large–blimp-like object was filmed over Salt Lake City, Utah. Called a UFO by many, the object appears to be some variety of blimp (perhaps something akin to a hyperblimp design the likes of this one). But according to new reports, there may be something else in the works that could lend itself toward an explanation for odd blimp-like craft such as this.

Sy Fy Channel’s Dvice website carried the story recently of a 230-foot long airship being developed by the Aeroscraft company called the Pelican, which will eventually be used by the Pentagon for a variety of missions, ranging from surveillance and reconnaissance, to lifting several tons of cargo from one place to another. The craft, which is still merely in prototype design stages after many years of development, bears a remarkable resemblance to classic UFO reports involving large, silent and often metallic objects seen hovering in the sky. According to the Aeroscraft website:

“Built with a rigid structure, the Aeroscraft can control lift at all stages with its Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) capabilities and carry maximum payload while in hover. These capabilities make the Aeroscraft more advanced compared to Airships and Hybrid Airships.”

And thus, even in a world of heavier than air flying craft, there might be quite a unique future for airships and dirigible craft.

The UFO–Airship Connection

The obvious ufological parallel here has to do with sightings of large “cigar shaped” aircraft witnessed throughout the decades, reports of which are rife throughout literature on the subject. Arguably, there must be a few instances where reported UFO craft have resulted from tests involving blimps or dirigible craft… and if such hovering and lifting technologies become the norm any time soon, we will likely be seeing plenty more of them on down the road.

The problem arises, however, from when such reports involve these craft moving at extreme speed, and performing other aerial gymnastics that would be impossible for even the most formidable airships–known or unknown–to be capable of performing. Furthermore, these objects in many UFO reports are very
